Susan's Studio

Out on the cost path I make watercolour sketches and identify the flora using field guides. I then work in oils back in my studio. I use Michael Harding and Old Holland oils which have rich high quality pigments.

I love to paint on Ampersand FSC certified museum board, the smooth surface allows me to move the paint with brushes and painting knives.

Along the Edge Penwith.

In a former career, Susan was a Biology Teacher, Author and Science Writer. This explains her fascination with the habitats and forms of wildflowers. Especially the flowers clinging to the edges of the cliffs as she walks the South-West Coast path near her Cornwall home. Leading on from a project for the Porthmeor Programme 2018 for professional artist development at the St Ives School of Painting, she produced her series of paintings “Along the Edge, Penwith", and this marked the start of her development as a professional artist.

Wildflower Meadows.

Susan has an interest in preserving British wildflower meadows. Working with a local golf club, she has surveyed the wildflowers in conservation areas of the course and is helping to improve the management of the area by liaising with the green-keeping staff. Her latest series of wildflower meadow paintings portrays these diverse and rare habitats, vital for pollinating insects.

Old Mine Workings in Cornwall

Susan’s mixed -media work reflects a curiosity for the unique rock formations of abandoned mine workings in Penwith, Cornwall. She has captured the amazing interplay of colours in the minerals around the old mine entrances using mixed media techniques and acrylics.

The Sandiway Paintings

Susan was commissioned to paint four large paintings portraying aspects of the lovely Sandiway Golf Course in Cheshire. These acrylic works are now on display in the re-furbished dining rooms in the clubhouse.

Summer Herbaceous Borders

Susan has been working on a new series of oil paintings inspired by the beautiful herbaceous borders at Arley Hall in Cheshire.

The South-West Coast Path, Sea, Rocks and Flowers

Recent work is focussed again on the landscape and flora along the South- West Coast Path from St Ives to Zennor. A new series of oil paintings brings out the colours and forms of the rocks and flowers set in wild landscapes with the sea foaming below.
